2017 Designer Series Rendezvous: Ted Hood - Bristol, Rhode Island
“He was the most forward-thinking, complete yachtsman of that generation, and maybe of generations to come. Nowadays, we have guys who are excellent helmsmen, or tacticians, or bowmen, or are good yacht designers or sailmakers. Ted Hood was all those and more.”
-Rives Potts, former Commodore New York Yacht Club

Ted Hood

Frederick Emmart Hood (May 5, 1927 — June 28, 2013) was an American yachtsman and Naval architect. Among his many achievements, he started the company Hood Sailmakers in Marblehead, Massachusetts in 1955, won the America’s Cup in 1974 as skipper of Courageous, and founded Hood Yachts Systems which eventually found its home in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.

Combining a natural sailing ability with his aptitude for design, Ted built and skippered a successful series of keel and centerboard racing yachts from 12 meters to his line of “Little Harbor” sailboats. He has even designed powerboats, pioneering today’s “express yacht” look. Whether it is sails, spars, systems, or hulls, Ted Hood has left his innovative mark on the sailing world.
