Back in the early 70’s Gulfstar had most of the charter business with the roomy motor sail series designed by the owner Vince Lazarra. As demand for better performing grew, Vince asked Ted to design and auxiliary sail series. This resulted in a 44, 50, and 60 foot both sloop and ketch. GROUSE II is a 50 of the later Mk II series built in 1979. This was custom built for a United Airlines pilot and was a 2 cabin layout as opposed to the typical 3 cabin for the charter trade. Her original name was JET LAG.
She spent some time in the Islands and was going to travel to Seattle when the owner got furloughed. Sold to a money manager in Connecticut, it became a dive boat to entertain his customers…never sailed again until I purchased her in August 1995 in Rodney Bay. In fact, she still has her original sails.
In our first month with now GROUSE II we rode out three hurricanes…Iris, Louie, and Maryland…That is another story but never put a scratch on her.
Spent two years in the Islands all the way down to Granada, then Bermuda and to her home in RI…RIYC and Newport YC.
