The Designer Series Announces 2018-2019 Biennial Events Celebrating Sparkman & Stephens

Newport, RI – – March 22, 2018 – – The 2018-2019 biennial Designer Series honoring the yacht designs of Sparkman & Stephens will kick off with a Designer Discussion and Sponsor Appreciation Party on June 28, 2018. Additional design centric events throughout the next year will lead into the Designer Series Rendezvous which will take place June 27 to 30, 2019.

The Designer Discussion will take place in Newport, RI on Thursday June 28th, 2018. This event will facilitate on-going education, talent development and provide an open exchange of ideas among yacht designers and other industry professionals.

The Designer Discussion will be followed by a Sponsor Appreciation party at the Ida Lewis Yacht Club. The 1932 schooner, Brilliant, will also be in attendance for those who wish to witness first hand one of the greatest designs from the mind of Olin Stephens.

The Designer Series Rendezvous will be based in Newport at Ft. Adams June 27 to 30, 2019 where dockage will be available at Sail Newport. This event will feature a wide variety of Sparkman & Stephens designed boats and will provide opportunities for not just boat owners, but for all those interested in the legacy of Sparkman & Stephens yacht designs. Activities will include social events honoring the history of Sparkman & Stephens, live entertainment, racing and awards and will culminate with a boat parade through Newport Harbor on Sunday the 30th.  Additional event timing and details will follow at a later date and will be posted to the web site at designerseries.org.


2017 Designer Series Scholarship Award Winner Is Announced

November 16, 2017 - - Newport, RI - - Mr. Frank Sisneroz was honored as the recipient of the 2017 Designer Series Scholarship at a reception that was held at the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) on November 1, 2017. Mr. Sisneroz who received the $1,500 scholarship check at the event is currently a student at the International Yacht Restoration School.

According to Andy Tyska, founder and Chairman of the Designer Series, “It is gratifying to award this scholarship, which is meant to support those who are navigating their careers in the marine industry which I am so passionate about. This is yet another dot that we can connect back to the designers who have affected so many lives. The annual Designer Series was conceived as an event that honors the past achievements of our iconic yacht designers and reconnects a diverse group around their creations. This annual scholarship will help cultivate the next generation of highly accomplished yacht designers.”

Mr. Sisneroz developed his passion for the ocean and sailing in the early 80s on a 10ft. long windsurfer. Since then his passion for sailing has resulted in his sailing and crewing on a wide variety of boats in southern California, including participating in three Newport Beach to Ensenada races.

Mr. Sisneros said, “One of my goals upon graduating from IYRS is to establish a local marine electrical engineering company where I will employ, train and inspire others to be creative and follow their passions for the marine industry. Another dream is to volunteer in community sailing programs to help expand sailing opportunities for young sailors throughout Rhode Island”

Designer Series to Announce 2017 Scholarship Award Winners

October 25, 2017 - - Newport, RI - - The recipients of the 2017 Designer Series Scholarship will be announced at a reception to be held at the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) on November 1, 2017 at 5:45 PM. The event will be held on the first floor of the new Brooks Building adjacent to the IYRS Building. Parking is available. Those involved in the 2017 event, which recognized yacht designer Ted Hood will be in attendance to present the award. The next 2018 Designer Series Rendezvous will recognize designs from the office of Sparkman & Stephens and members of the event Advisory Committee will be on hand to discuss next season’s gathering.

The Designer Series Scholarship of $3,000 will support two individuals who are pursuing careers in yacht design and marine engineering.
